You want a computer that is powerful enough to do real work. You also want something that has great battery life and is really portable. Oh yeah, you want it to look nice too. This machine is terrific and feels rock solid. It also has nice finishes like matching sleeve and case for the included wired ethernet and VGA video out dongles.

Pros
- Super fast power-on, wake, and shut-down/sleep -> no waiting around for the machine to be ready to do work
- The trackpad is silky smooth and very responsive and right clicking is done by pressind down the bottom right corner of the track pad
- Very light but rock solid
- Brushed metal looks very sleek and feels great

Cons
- Two finger scrolling is a bit jerky at times
- Takes a bit of practice to learn how to open the clamshell case

The quality of this laptop far surpasses its price. In addition to having great specs, this laptop is also really well-built. The fans are silent and efficient. The laptop barely gets warm even under during gaming. The laptop chassis is solid and compact. Th brushed aluminum cover is elegant and does not suffer from fingerprint build-up.

Unlike the earlier version which I returned (n53sv-xe1), EH71 does not have its predecessor's disappointing keyboard flexes. The screen is vivid and bright, but the viewing angle can be a bit better. My only complaint at the moment is the huge, easily scratched plastic screen bezel. I decided not to go with the high resolution model because the text gets a bit too small.

Also, I was amazed at the battery life of this laptop. Using power-saving mode, this laptop lasted 5-6 hours.

This is simply my first impression of this notebook, i will update later to make sure no problems have arised. This beast has everything you need to take on everyday work, photoshop, gaming, AutoCAD, and it does it flawlessly. The matte black ruberized material used throughout the notebook feels nice and gives you some extra grip and is cool to the touch. The dual fan system keeps everything cool even when you're gaming with it on your lap! My previous laptop practically gave me 3rd degree burns when i used it on my lap. The backlit keyboard is very nice and looks beautiful in a dark room. The notebook does come with a software that limits CPU/GPU clock speeds for when you're simply browsing the internet or using word, which you can switch back to gaming mode for 100% power! I have had no problems with this product and highly recommend it.

I did a bit of research and this laptop seemed pretty highly anticipated by those looking to buy and well received by the few that already had them. I also saw that it seemed most of the initial shipment came with 1333MHz DDR3 ram instead of 1066. I opened mine up and it does have 1333MHz. A supply issue I guess. Very nice considering it's a $150+ upgrade on some websites.

I installed Borderlands and it seemed like a dog at first, then I realized I didn't have the AC adapter plugged in. It automatically goes to a power saver mode when only on battery (of course) and it makes a big difference. Once plugged in I put all the settings on high except for anti-aliasing at 4 instead of 16 and resolution at native 1920x1080 it ran a little slow. Frame rate was around 30 usually. Fine for most games but not a FPS. At 1280x720 the frame rate was in the 50s. I played for about an hour and it was running very hot so I stopped for a while. I bought this laptop to replace an older Dell laptop I had because I burned out the vid card on the Dell, so I was a bit worried, maybe needlessly.

The keyboard is fine but the keys are real slippery, could use some kind of texture or concave shape. They are lighted which will be very useful (hit Fn+F4 when you 1st get it, mine were turned off).
Could use a USB in the back (I like to use a cooling pad) but it has 2 on each side near the front which is nice.
Lights on the lid are annoying. The side ones turn off in battery mode, I'll have to look into a setting to turn them off all the time. The logo light in the center of the lid never turns off.
I like the physical switch for wireless and bluetooth.

No dead pixels, I'll be looking close for 30 days but I hope to not have to RMA. Nice warranties on this thing, definitely a selling point. Watch out if you try to buy an ASUS from Best Buy --they do not honor all the standard ASUS warranties, I think the accident insurance. Because Best Buy wants to sell you their own insurance for $179.

The thing I don't like the most about this laptop is the screen size. Not the resolution but the actual physical size. There is approximately a 3/4 inch bezel on the sides and bottom and nearly 1 1/4 inch at the top. This makes the laptop less attractive visually also, like it's chunky and thick. The large top bezel is likely because of the webcam which I will never use. The screen could easily be 16+ inches which would help lots with the high resolution. At 1920x1080 for a laptop you need all the size you can get. Text at 100% is tiny but mine shipped at 125% so that's smart on their part. I primarily use it for painting in Photoshop and Painter so the high resolution is great. Trying to show someone text on the screen is difficult when they can't read it unless they are real close.

One other thing I didn't like was 40+GB of pre-installed software. Why anyone would want all this crap is beyond me. I was going to wipe and reinstall but there is the quick start OS which I need to look into and see if that will be wiped and if there is any difficulty reinstalling it. I pretty much always plan on wiping a new computer but most people wouldn't so that is a factor.

I got my backpack and mouse, I see some others didn't.

Oh yeah it's not black, even the darkest part of the lid is a dark blue.

Upgrade to Win 8 pro went smoothly. Didn't have too much garbage to uninstall prior to using (although, there is always some). Laptop boots fast and the touchscreen works well.

I needed to upgrade my tech for a low cost and this fit the bill. I considered Chromebooks and netbooks which were around the same price point. At the price I paid, $350, I got a full laptop. The screen is great, I was surprised that the size of it and that the keyboard had a numeric keypad.

Very nice entry-level laptop; something I don't have buyer's remorse about. I would not hesitate to purchase another one, should the need arise.

For the price this is an exellent model. Great processor, great overall system. Easy to upgrade - HDD, RAM, and mini-pci. One big thing that surprised me was how cool it stays. Not until playing Diablo 3 for almost 3 hours did it finally start to heat up and that was only just around the vent; no where else on the laptop heated up at all. Asus products have always been good to me and this doesnt seem to be any different, plus you always have Asus' exellent warranty just in case.

Just bought this on Amazon a couple weeks ago. First impressions are lackluster - this laptop looks generic, devoid of any really refined style aesthetically. Simply, it looks cheap. I was disappointed that the screen was glossy - more reflection than my eyes care to deal with - matte would have been much better. One of the reviews I had read somewhere else online had mentioned a backlit keyboard, but alas, my unit sported no such thing. The description on Amazon.com listed four USB ports, but there were only three - two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0. The headphone jack and the microphone jack are combined into one port, which I don't really care for. At the front of the unit there is an SD card reader that was not mentioned in the Amazon.com description. The HDD is on the slow side (5400rpm), but you will probaby not notice unless you are into alot of gaming.

On the good side, though the case is plastic it seems plenty solid enough. The keyboard is actually pretty good, I thought it had a nice feel to the keys when I type and is perfectly usable. The screen image (1600x900 pixels) is crisp and bright, and despite its glossiness still pleasant to view. The CPU is very fast, 6gb memory more than adequate for most media viewing, music and normal internet usage. The 0.3mp built in video camera works well if you like to SKYPE online. This system seems to play games decently well at lower settings, although serious gamers probably won't be very satisfied with its performance. The Bluray disc player is nice, and with the 17.3" screen this makes a nice movie player on the go. Computer runs quite cool, and the audio sound is ok, nothing to get too excited about. If you want to use it to watch movies, use the head phone jack or a set of good external speakers.

Best things about this laptop are the i5-3210 CPU and the Nvidia GeForce 610M discrete graphics card. The large 750gb HDD, though somewhat slow, will give most people more than enough storage, and 6gb memory make this laptop a decent value for the amount of money they are asking for it. Just wish it had more going for it in the style department, another USB port, and a matte screen. And the backlit keyboard would have been sweet!

If you're a gamer and you refuse to drop a bundle of money on overrated Alienware rigs, this is what you should aim for. The power on this machine is simply phenomenal! With the hardware it currently possesses, it's enough to run any game on the market at the highest level of detail.

Pros: Lightning fast, lightweight for a gaming laptop, more bang for buck, runs cool and stays silent, beautifully designed, includes nice bag and gaming laser mouse with purchase.

Cons: Touchpad is a little sketchy (I'm sure if you're gaming, you'll either used the included gaming laser mouse or use your own), shell can scratch very easily.

I did not get this on Amazon, but bought this at a (now) slightly cheaper price elsewhere. Having used this for several months, it's a good machine that has solid construction and is pretty fast. The battery life is decent, and the screen is crisp and clear. We use it for low-end tasks (Skyping) to higher-end stuff like video encoding. It seems to handle everything we throw at it - the i3 processor is speedy enough for most things these days - even some previously taxing games for my old Core 2 Duo. The scratch-resistant material is pretty nice and keeps the machine looking new.

(I'll try to remember to update this in a few months as I'm only 24 hours in to using the laptop, but I know I could have used more reviews when I was shopping so I wanted to share some initial thoughts.)

This unit is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a bigger screen than a netbook, but something small/light enough to easily carry around and this is perfect for that. So far battery life is great and I've had no problems connecting to various wifi networks, printers, etc.

Set-up went smoothly. There was the typical time to let Windows update (this product DOES have Windows 7- huge sell for me!) and then it was good to go. I did choose to uninstall some of the existing programs, but that seems to be a standard issue on most units. I have since installed all of my software (skype, itunes, stata, etc) and they are all running perfectly, including some work with a pretty big data set. You do have to make your own back-up discs (which again, standard) and submit some information for the warranty, but I consider that time well invested.

Since other reviews have mentioned the trackpad- it's definitely wider than on any of my previous laptops. However, I haven't had any problems with accidental dragging or my palm touching while typing. I'm not sure if I have smaller hands, or just hold my wrists up higher anyway, but if that has you on the fence I would try to find one in a store to test out. I may end up disabling some of the zoom features as I don't intend to use them, but I haven't had any problems so far.

Things that I wish were a little better: the webcam quality is kind of low- not bad, but not any better than my previous laptop (several years old) and I was hoping to see some improvement. However, people I've skyped with have reported hearing me clearly, so the built in microphone apparently works well. The speakers are on the bottom of the unit, and while the volume is fine, the quality is kind of off. The music sounds kind of tinny, or like there's an echo. However, when I plug in headphones, that sound quality is fine. So I guess I'll be using headphones (or maybe external speakers) more often. However, I don't consider either of these to detract from my ability to use the laptop for all its necessary functions, and I expect to lose some of the bells and whistles when I buy a mid-price laptop, so I'm still giving five stars.

UPDATE: Less than 48 hours after first turning on this laptop, I am getting a boot failure screen indicative of hard drive failure. After an hour on the phone with tech support I am being instructed to send it to a service center (I pay for shipping and the box). Since it's still under warranty the actual fix is at no cost, but I am still going to be without my new laptop for weeks while they fix the problem. This is my first Asus product and is likely to be the last the way things are going. I really liked the laptop while it was working but 48 hours to hard drive failure is ridiculous.

UPDATE #2: On the suggestion of a friend I took it to Best Buy before mailing it in. The guy opened it up and the hard drive wasn't connected to the rest of the laptop. For whatever reason, there weren't any screws holding it in place. He found some screws, put it all together and made it stay together, and now it's fine. I'm glad it was such an easy fix, but I'm taking a star off my original review for Asus selling laptops that are apparently not put together well.
